77 pianists announced for 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition free screening auditions

 

The free Screening Auditions for the Seventeenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will take place March 16–22, 2025, at PepsiCo Recital Hall at TCU.

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Cliburn announced the 77 pianists representing 22 countries and regions — from an international applicant pool of 340 — who were selected to come to Fort Worth to participate in the live Screening Auditions of the seventeenth edition of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. 

The screening auditions will be from March 16 through March 22. These recitals are free and open to the public. Visit cliburn.org/2025-screening-auditions to learn more. Patrons must be 10 years of age or older to attend the Screening Auditions or the Cliburn Competition.

The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will take place from May 21 to June 7.

The 77 pianists range from ages 18 to 30, including 18 women and 59 men and represent the following countries:

  • Austria, Canada, China, Georgia, Germany, Hong Kong/China, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan/China, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States
  • The most represented countries are: China (22), South Korea (10), United States (9)

Each of the 77 pianists will perform 25-minute recitals for a five-member screening jury:

The 30 competitors will be announced on April 9, and they’ll return to Fort Worth on May 18 for orientation and piano selection.

The preliminary round (May 21-23) of the competition will consist of 30 competitors performing 40-minute recitals, which will then be narrowed to 18. Those 18 will compete in the quarterfinal round (May 24-25) and perform a 40-minute recital. Both of these rounds will be played at Van Cliburn Concert Hall at TCU. 

The field will then be cut to 12 semifinalists (May 28 to June 1), where those remaining pianists will compete in two phases: 

  1. Each competitor will perform a 60-minute recital.
  2. Each competitor will perform a Mozart concerto with Carlos Miguel Prieto and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, selected from a list.

The final round (June 3-7) will feature six performers at Bass Performance Hall. The six competitors will perform two concertos with Marin Alsop and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra:

  1. Each competitor will perform one concerto selected from a list.
  2. Each competitor will perform one concerto of the competitor’s choosing.

The gold, silver and bronze medalists will be announced at an awards ceremony on June 7. The medalists will be chosen by a competition jury consisting of:
