A Fort Worth man’s compassion and quick action saved a litter of abandoned puppies on New Year’s Day.
FORT WORTH, Texas — Eight puppies were rescued from a trash can at Crestwood Park in Fort Worth.
On New Year’s Day, Matt McEntire, a volunteer with the Humane Society of North Texas took his daily walk to the park. As he sat on a park bench with his dog, Dublin, McEntire heard the sound of whimpering coming from a trash can steps away.
McEntire discovered a litter of eight puppies sitting at the bottom of the trash can.
“It’s a bit of a shock,” McEntire said. “I thought I was dreaming when I saw all these puppies with their little heads. They were just watching me, trying to climb up.”
McEntire took several trips home, carrying two puppies at a time. He fed them and kept them safe until the next day when the Humane Society of North Texas reopened.
According to Cassie Davidson, a volunteer with the Humane Society of North Texas, the puppies hadn’t received any medical care before they arrived at the shelter. Davidson said they were hungry, thirsty, and had fleas, parasites and worms.
“We knew we had to act fast,” Davidson said.
Davidson said the puppies are recovering and being treated for ailments. The first few will be up for adoption Wednesday, Jan. 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Petsmart located at Montgomery Plaza. The rest of the litter should be ready for adoption next week, Davidson said.
“There is absolutely no need to abandon an animal, break the law, and risk the life of an animal who is defenseless,” Davidson said.
Each puppy was given an Irish name in honor of McEntire, their rescuer who was born and raised in Ireland.
McEntire has volunteered about 1,300 hours with the Humane Society of North Texas over the past year. He’s generously offered to match $1,300 — a dollar for every hour he’s given to help pets in need.
