SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are investigating after a woman was shot in the head while driving on the city’s Northwest Side early Monday morning.
Officers were called around 3:30 a.m. to a vehicle crash near the intersection of Fredericksburg Road and Gardina Street, not far from Babcock Road.
According to police, a woman in her 30s or 40s had first called for help saying someone was following her near Fredericksburg Road.
Emergency crews arrived to find the driver’s side window of her car shattered and a bullet hole in her headrest while tending to the woman’s apparent head injury. She was taken by EMS to University Hospital, where she is currently listed in critical condition.
Investigators say the woman was on the phone with someone when both the shooting and the crash happened. When officers arrived, the phone call was still connected.
Police said a passenger inside the car was overheard by the person on the phone telling the driver to drive off as the shooter approached. That passenger was gone however, when officers arrived.
Authorities said during their search of the area they found a shell casing in the street. At this time, a motive for the shooting is not currently known.
The San Antonio Police Department, the San Antonio Fire Department and EMS all answered the call.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
