SAN ANTONIO – The judicial landscape continues to favor Democrats in Bexar County after six Republican seats up for re-election were overturned on Tuesday.
Those courts include:
County Court 13 Judge Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez, who won her re-election bid, said she wasn’t surprised about more Democratic judges getting voted into office.
“As a community like ours grows, it tends to lean more left,” Gonzalez said. “I’m not surprised that we are growing in that direction whatsoever.”
In Texas, state district and county court judges run as political party candidates, which traditionally has resulted in sweeps similar to Tuesday’s election.
In Bexar County, we saw the same trends in 2018 and 2020.
According to Gonzalez, it looks like at this point, the trend will continue into the next election cycle in 2024.
“Unless there’s some sort of conservative revolution that makes up for the growth in progressive thinks and the growing in Democratic party voters,” Gonzales said.
When it comes to judges, Gonzalez said one’s political affiliation shouldn’t actually matter because once on the bench, all biases go out the door.
“We don’t ask you when you approach the bench if you’re Democrat or Republican. It doesn’t matter to us,” Gonzalez said. “It’s unethical for it to matter to us.”
