DFW weather: Timeline, amounts, what to expect as rain and snow head to North Texas

DALLAS — Quick recap of what we’re expecting:

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for western and northern North Texas.

DFW is NOT under a Winter Weather Advisory at this time.

Areas under the Winter Weather Advisory will have the best chance for accumulating snow. Mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces. But those elevated surfaces could include bridges and overpasses, which could see slushy, snowy conditions and some travel issues.

Monday night:

Rain will start to move into North Texas from west to east. Some t-storms may be possible for southern North Texas into Central Texas, but the severe threat looks low.

Tuesday morning – mid-afternoon:

Rain will spread across North Texas. It will be chilly and rainy with temps in the 30s and 40s but above freezing.

Rain may start to mix with snow across western and northern North Texas. If this occurs, accumulation looks to minor and on grassy or elevated surfaces. Travel issues are not likely.

Tuesday mid-afternoon – early evening:

It will continue to be a chilly and rainy day. But as the storm system moves overhead, rain may mix with snow from DFW to the north. A transition to mostly snow may occur across western and northwestern North Texas.

Temps will continue to stay above freezing for most, so if snow is falling, most will melt immediately on contact with the ground or roads.

However, any heavier bursts of snow could cause some to accumulate on roads, bridges, or overpasses causing slushy conditions. Chances for this will mainly be across western and northern North Texas.

Tuesday late evening – night:

A round of mostly snow will move across the northern part of North Texas. From northern parts of DFW to the north.

However, temps will continue to stay mostly above freezing so most snow will melt as it hits the ground or roads. A brief dusting may be possible for DFW, but travel issues are not likely.

Any precip will taper off during the nighttime hours with all of North Texas dry by Wednesday morning.

Temps overnight will mostly stay above freezing, so re-freezing or icy roads are not likely for most. The exception being western and northern North Texas where temps could drop down to around or just below freezing. Some icy roads may be possible first thing Wednesday in these areas.

The farther north you are, the better the chances for accumulating snow. Mainly for grassy and elevated surfaces.

In and around DFW a dusting or brief coating of snow on grassy or elevated areas are possible, snowy roads are not likely.

Because temps are expected to stay above freezing, widespread travel issues are not likely due to snowy or icy roads. 

The exception being far northern or northwestern areas where higher amounts could cause some slushy or snowy roads.

The chances for snow grab the headlines, but this does look to be our first chance for a widespread, soaking rain this year. Rainfall totals of give or take 1in look possible for most.
