Timeline of potential severe weather Wednesday in North Texas

Temps will climb again Wednesday but as a strong front moves in some severe storms are possible. That front brings much cooler weather back to North Texas.

DALLAS — After seeing rain Tuesday morning followed by very gusty winds (40-50+ mph) during the day, more active weather is headed to North Texas over the next couple of days.

Fast facts

Wednesday warmth

Winds will pick up out of the south on Wednesday, but will not be nearly as gusty as they were on Tuesday.

These winds will bring warmth and moisture back to North Texas. Highs will climb into the 70s for most with mid to upper 70s possible in areas that see the most sunshine.

Wednesday t-storm chances

4 p.m. – 7 p.m.

As a front and dry-line move into North Texas, t-storms MAY fire up northwest of the D-FW area during the late afternoon into the evening.

However, these storms are not guaranteed as a “cap” will be in place. Remember, a cap is a warm layer of air above our heads that suppresses t-storm development. If the cap breaks, t-storms can quickly develop.

IF those storms form, they would likely be severe with a threat of large hail and damaging winds. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

7 p.m. – 11 p.m.

As that front and dry-line move into DFW, t-storms may move into the area along with it or they could form over DFW.

If DFW sees storms on Wednesday, this is the most likely time frame.

Any storms during this time could be severe as well with primarily a wind and hail threat. However, the tornado threat would not be completely zero.

After 11 p.m.

Storms move east of DFW into eastern North Texas and out of North Texas during the late night hours.

While the severe threat is not zero (mainly for wind and hail), it does look lower than earlier in the evening and night.

A look at the full timecast:

Severe risk

Simply, the severe risk is where there is potential for storms to be out there during the evening into nighttime hours. Mainly from DFW to the north and east.

The main threats will be large hail and damaging winds. An isolated tornado is possible as well with the strongest storms.

Much cooler Thursday

Temps will be around 30° cooler on Thursday!

Highs will likely only be in the 40s with a breezy wind from the northwest making it feel even cooler.

We’ll be dry Thursday and Friday, but it will be a reminder that we are still in winter.
