Spurs head to Austin for home games on Thursday, Saturday night

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs’ 50th anniversary season is taking them to Austin for back-to-back games as part of the team’s drive to deepen their regional fanbase.

Led by coach Gregg Popovich, the Spurs will host the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday, April 6 and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday, April 8 at the Moody Center in Austin.

The Moody Center is a new world class arena that sits on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. The $375 million, 15,000 plus seat arena opened on April 20, 2022.

Following the Spurs 115-94 loss Tuesday night at the Phoenix Suns, Tre Jones’ sights turned to the games in Austin.

“I’m extremely excited to play in Austin in front of a little bit different of a fan base there,” Jones said. “I think we can consider that a home away from home for sure. We’re extremely excited to be in front of those fans there. We’re hyped for the atmosphere that it’s going to be. It will be two good games out there, so we’re looking to bring it and hopefully put on a show for those fans out there.”

San Antonio will play a total of four home games away from the AT&T Center this season. Their first one was Saturday, Dec. 17 in Mexico City a 111-101 loss to the Miami Heat. Their second home away from home game went down Friday, Jan 13 when the Spurs set a new NBA attendance record for a single game with 68,323 fans.

The Spurs lost 144-113, but longtime fans loved the chance to hang out and watch a game in the team’s former home.
