We reported on Friday about Joe Biden’s statement finally acknowledging four-year-old Navy — the child of his son Hunter and Lundern Roberts — as one of his seven grandchildren. I noted how cold and perfunctory this was, how they did as little as they possibly could with a brief official statement late on a Friday. My colleague Sister Toldjah also had a great take on what gaslighting this was – that this was about reacting to criticism.
I wanted to share a few more observations about Joe Biden here. The Bidens gave this statement to People while maintaining that they wanted people to respect the child’s privacy.
“Our son Hunter and Navy’s mother, Lunden, are working together to foster a relationship that is in the best interests of their daughter, preserving her privacy as much as possible going forward,” President Biden said in a statement provided exclusively to PEOPLE. [….]
“This is not a political issue, it’s a family matter,” the president’s statement continues. “Jill and I only want what is best for all of our grandchildren, including Navy.”
That was it. Then they had a “source” in the piece trying to justify why they haven’t acknowledged the child for years, saying that Hunter and Lunden Roberts just settled a protracted battle on child support.
After that, the Biden team planted/leaked this statement to the New York Times, “The president told his son that he wanted to meet Navy when the time was right, according to a person familiar with those discussions.”
This is a remaking of reality. It’s been settled that she was Hunter’s child since November 2019, when the DNA test came in. They settled the child support matter in 2020. The time to acknowledge the child would have been in November 2019 or after the 2020 child support settlement.
But this was Joe’s nasty reaction at the time to Fox’s Peter Doocy asking about Hunter being confirmed the father. Look at the anger and the looks that could kill. This is who Joe Biden is.
It isn’t Peter Doocy who has been lacking class here. It’s Joe Biden and his son. They’re acting like this settlement somehow decided something that would allow them to recognize little Navy, but they’ve known she was Hunter’s for years. Hunter hasn’t been “working together” for the best interests of his daughter; he’s been trying to cut her child support and deny her the family name. That’s what this battle that was settled in June was about. That was just Hunter’s effort to get out of paying the amount they agreed upon in the original settlement in 2020. He cried poverty in the child support case to reduce the amount, yet he got more than a million dollars for his paintings over the past couple of years. That doesn’t sound poor to me.
If this had been about the child’s privacy and accepting her into the family, they would have done it long ago. They wouldn’t have waited all this time since it was determined she was the granddaughter. And the Bidens are still playing games with that last statement about meeting her “when the time was right.” When is the time going to be right? Joe Biden has had years. He’s only saying something now because of the election and the criticism. Then also, who is privy to the discussions between a father and son about such things? What People should be honest about is that this is the family “source” spin.
What is particularly obnoxious about all this spin was that the official White House position was that they only had six grandchildren up until this point. This, again, is so on-brand. Joe Biden’s “reality” is what he says it is. Don’t bother him with the facts. And if you do, if you challenge that “reality” that he’s trying to push, you will get that anger. We’ve seen it in so many other situations with him, but it’s particularly ugly here, especially when he’s trying to sell this “devoted middle-class family guy” thing to the American people.
In all honesty, I’m not sure I would want that beautiful little child near this dysfunctional family. But the fact that Joe Biden has reacted like this to her says everything about the terrible human being that he is.
