Rusty Surette is the news anchor and executive producer for KBTX’s 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. newscasts. He has one of the most-followed social media platforms in the Brazos Valley and produces popular franchises including Be Remarkable and Restaurant Report Card.
For nearly 25 years, Rusty has worked in local television news as an award-winning anchor, investigative reporter, executive producer, assignments manager, and news photojournalist.
He joined KBTX in May 2015.
Rusty began his TV career in high school in his hometown of Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas. He’s also worked in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Raleigh, North Carolina, Las Vegas, and Oklahoma City.
In 2011, he took a short break from television news to join the American Red Cross. In the role of Regional Director of Communications, he spent countless hours helping disaster victims across Oklahoma, Texas, and Mississippi.
Today, Rusty continues to be a Red Cross volunteer and board member. He’s also a board member and supporter of many other non-profit groups in the region. He serves as emcee and host of several events throughout the year including the Hispanic Forum of Bryan College Station Scholarship Gala and the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets Hall of Honor Gala.
Rusty is also a 2018 alum of Leadership Brazos.
In 2017, Rusty and KBTX were awarded the Texas Associated Press Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas Award for an investigative report involving a local school district.
He’s been nominated for several regional Emmy awards and received multiple regional RTDNA Edward R. Murrow awards.
He’s also recognized for his reporting, anchoring, editing, and photography from the Texas Associated Press, Oklahoma Associated Press, Louisiana Associated Press, Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists, Southeast Texas Press Club, and Nevada Electronic Media Association.
Since 2019, Rusty has been named Best TV Personality in multiple reader’s choice awards including Bryan Broadcasting’s Best of the Brazos Valley, The Eagle’s Readers’ Choice Awards, Best of BCS awards from Maroon Weekly, and Insite Magazine’s A-List awards.
Rusty is married to Marco Surette-Alvarez of Navasota and they’re the proud parents of two pups and one rescue cat. He also has an associate degree in Personal Fitness Training and Exercise Science from Heritage College in Oklahoma City.
