It’s been a crazy Thursday. We’ve seen liberals celebrate Donald Trump’s conviction on 34 counts of business records fraud in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s despicable case against the former president, while we’ve also seen Republicans and pundits deploring the perversion of our justice system by these zealots.

I can’t say I knew what RFK Jr.’s reaction would be if Trump were convicted, but now he’s made his feelings known, and he absolutely shredded the unethical lawfare attack against the former president in no uncertain terms. “The Democratic Party’s strategy is to beat President Trump in the courtroom ra ther than the ballot box,” he wrote. “This will backfire in November. Even worse, it is profoundly undemocratic.”
His best line in the post sums up what’s at stake here and what just these persecutors are risking:
You can’t save democracy by destroying it first.
Well said. Democrats are terrified of simply facing the voters, he continued:

The Democrats are afraid they will lose in the voting booth, so instead they go after President Trump in the courtroom.
You may like the guy, or not, but he’s crystallized the true narrative expertly here. He’s also not trying to pretend that he doesn’t have a personal stake in the matter—since he’s running for office against both Trump and Biden. But, refreshingly, he would like your vote based on his ideas, not because of rogue prosecutors and judges. And he’s also not shy about criticizing the former president and talking about policies, not decades-old business entries that were somehow this great dastardly crime:
I’m also running against President Trump in this election. The difference is I’m challenging him on his record. His lockdowns during Covid. His atrocious environmental record. His cozy relationship with corporate America. His support for the war machine. His failure to root out waste and corruption in Washington. His service to the billionaire class. His bloating of the national debt. These are the issues that shape American lives. I’ll challenge him on these things, but the Democrats won’t. You know why? Because they pursue the very same policies.

RFK Jr. is a major longshot to be a factor in the race, and some of his positions don’t’ resonate with many voters, but what he says here about the politicized lawfare against the presumptive GOP nominee is right on target. He’s running as an independent, but we know his family’s history is deeply intertwined with the Democratic party. It’s nice to see that at least one person who came out of that world still has some principles left.
