CANYON, Texas (KFDA) – West Texas A&M University is now offering support to students who are currently in active recovery through its Buff CARES Program.
“We like to think of ourselves at the West Texas A&M University is educating and attending to the needs of the whole student is the way we say it, and I think it’s very important because they are real needs,” said WTAMU President Dr. Walter Wendler.
The program allows students who are currently a year into their recovery and can maintain a 3.0 GPA the resources they need to stay sober.
“The graduate students who are training for their graduate degrees, nurse practitioners that are focusing on mental health, and the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners will be the ones providing some of the car,” said WTAMU Dean of nursing Holly Jeffreys.
Some of the key features of the program includes on-campus sober living, wellness activities and sober social events, as well as free mental health resources provided by the WTAMU College of Nursing.
According to WTAMU officials, students in similar programs average a 3.7 GPA, which is a higher average than the general student population.
