The gymnastics star’s husband is expected to cheer her on in Paris for the final round.
WASHINGTON — Simone Biles is competing in her third Olympics nearly three years after she withdrew from several events during the Tokyo Games to prioritize her mental health.
With the twisties and Tokyo firmly behind her, the Olympic champion is headlining Team USA’s women’s gymnastics team with fellow gymnastic stars Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and newcomer Hezly Rivera.
Biles, 27, became the oldest American woman to make an Olympic gymnastics team since the 1950s, after securing a win at the Olympic trials last month.
In the two years she took off after Tokyo, she experienced many changes.
Last year, the 2016 Olympic all-around champion made a stunning return to gymnastics, winning a record sixth world title. The gymnastics superstar regularly meets with therapists, even during competitions — a sign that she continues to prioritize her mental health.
Gymnastics aside, the athlete married her longtime partner Jonathan Owens last year.
Who is Simone Biles’ husband?
Simone Biles married Jonathan Owens in April 2023 at a courthouse in Houston.
The couple met on a dating app called Raya in March 2020 and began dating shortly after. A few weeks after their marriage, they held a second ceremony in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
“I do … officially Owens,” the seven-time Olympic medalist wrote on Instagram at the time, sharing photos of the ceremony. In his own post, Owens called her “My person, forever.”
Owens, who is an athlete himself, is currently playing as a safety for the Chicago Bears.
The NFL team is allowing him to miss out on five days of training camp in order to travel to Paris to cheer on his wife. Owens posted photos on his Instagram story Sunday as he cheered on Biles while watching from the U.S. He’s expected to head overseas Monday night, before the gymnastics finals.
The athletic pair are building a house in the Houston suburbs that will be finished in late summer or early fall — after the Paris Games.
Support goes both ways for the couple.
During the 2024 NFL season, Biles was a frequent face in the Green Bay Packers’ stadium, supporting her football husband as his team attempted a bid for the Super Bowl.
