Senior point guard Zhuric Phelps elaborates on his choice to depart from SMU for Texas A&M

SMU senior point guard Zhuric Phelps is 1-of-3 experienced student-athletes who chose the Texas A&M men’s basketball team in the transfer portal this offseason.

“I played them for two years at my past school. I’m a bit familiar with them and the guys, Wade and Manny, we come from Dallas,” Phelps told KBTX on Saturday. “Just being able to be around people that can make me better is something that I’ve really been looking forward to.”

The Aggies beat the Mustangs 79-66 this past season on Nov. 14 in Dallas. Phelps tallied 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Texas A&M defeated SMU 83-64 on Nov. 30, 2022 in College Station. Phelps recorded 23 points, 3 rebounds and 1 steal.

Phelps was joined by senior shooting guard C.J. Wilcher from Nebraska and junior power forward Pharrel Payne from Minnesota in transferring to Aggieland at the end of April.

The senior floor general attended Duncanville High School in the Lone Star State.
