Texas Tech University School of Law and St. Mary’s University School of Law were named the 2023-2024 ABA Competitions Co-Champions by the American Bar Association.
Champions are recognized by the ABA for earning the most total points in the Law Student Division’s Arbitration Competition, Negotiation Competition, Client Counseling Competition, Representation in Mediation Competition, and National Appellate Advocacy Competition.
“Our competitions offer students an amazing opportunity to hone essential lawyering skills before they enter practice,” Competitions Committee Co-chair Connie S. Smothermon said in a press release. “Through consistent participation and success in ABA competitions, these law schools display especially well-rounded practical skills training programs. We are thrilled to recognize these schools through the Competitions Championship.”
St. Mary’s is the first school to claim regional titles in all five ABA competitions in the same year. Its teams’ wins include one National Championship, three Regional Championships, two Regional Finalists, and one Regional Semifinalist.
With its win at the Representation in Mediation Competition this year, Texas Tech becomes the first school to claim national championships in all five competitions. The school’s previous national championships: National Appellate Advocacy Competition (’84, ’94, ’98, ’13, and ’21), Arbitration Competition (’08, ’10, ’12, ’14, ’17, and ’20), Negotiation Competition (’92, ’97, and ’19), and Client Counseling Competition (’87).
