Texas is enduring its hottest days of 2024. Abilene recorded its all-time record highest temperature yesterday of 113 degrees, beating out last year. Today, temperatures above 110 degrees will be observed across Northwest Texas, Big Country, Concho Valley, and Edwards Plateau. We may not have matched last summer’s number of triple-digit days, but we sure are hitting the ‘nasty hot’ energy. However, light is at the end of the tunnel – and I’m optimistic we’re at the ‘top’ of our heat charts for the year.

Thunderstorm Chances
Isolated thunderstorms are possible this afternoon in Central Texas, Hill Country, and South-Central Texas. Any storms that develop will produce gusty winds, cloud-to-ground lightning, and brief rainfall. Scattered storms are possible Friday morning into Friday afternoon in the Panhandle, West Texas, Permian Basin, Borderland, East Texas, Brazos Valley, Southeast Texas, and Coastal Plains. Stronger storms may produce small hail, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and brief heavy rain. Rain-cooled air may also drop temperatures for a few lucky folks.
High temperatures will start to come down a bit as we head into the weekend across Texas. We’re still expecting afternoon temperatures in the 90s to low 100s. However, that’ll still be several degrees ‘less hot’ than we’ve seen the last few days, especially across the western two-thirds of Texas.
Weather Changes Coming Next Week?
A weather pattern shift is becoming increasingly probable next week. Our upper-level heat dome may finally weaken and allow for tropical moisture to return to Texas. Long-range weather models are trying to bring hope of increasing rain chances to at least the southern half of Texas next week. We’ll have to see how much rain we can squeeze out, but assuming that we can see more moisture, that would allow for additional cloud cover and a better chance of not emulating the sun’s surface every afternoon. Here’s hoping!
