The 44-year-old Kaufman man was convicted of Burglary of a Habitation with Intent to Commit Murder, a first-degree felony.
KAUFMAN, Texas — A 44-year-old man who attempted to break into a Kaufman County home – where a woman and two kids were living – with a pickaxe was sentenced to 50 years in prison last week.
According to the Kaufman County District Attorney, Joseph Adrian Garcia was convicted of Burglary of a Habitation with Intent to Commit Murder, a first-degree felony.
On Sept. 2, 2022, Kaufman police responded to a 911 call from a concerned neighbor who reported seeing a man (Garcia) yelling and screaming while trying to break into a home’s front door with a pickaxe. Kaufman police officers arrived at the scene and arrested Garcia.
Kaufman police said their investigation revealed Garcia was “under the influence of suspected narcotics” while attempting to break into the home and had been threatening “I will kill you” to anyone he made contact with.
A woman and two children – ages six and eight – were in the home, according to the DA’s press release.
After a three-day trial, a jury declared Garcia guilty and sentenced him to 50 years in prison on Aug. 15.
