PHARR, Texas – In a heartwarming celebration of perseverance and achievement, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD hosted a Summer Graduation for over 80 students, ages 18-26, who earned their high school diplomas and college certificates through the PSJA College, Career & Technology Academy (CCTA) on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at the PSJA Southwest High School Auditorium.

The CCTA program, designed specifically for individuals aged 18-26, offers a second chance for those who need to complete their high school education. Whether they are missing credits or have not yet fulfilled the requirements for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), this program provides a vital pathway to success. This graduation also marked the one-year anniversary of PSJA ISD’s decision to revive this essential program in 2023.

The ceremony was not just a recognition of academic accomplishment; it was a celebration of resilience and the first step toward brighter futures. Surrounded by proud family members and friends, the graduates stood as a testament to the power of determination and the belief that it is never too late to achieve your dreams.

For Mark Alvis, earning his high school diploma was not just a personal milestone; it was a commitment to his family. He wanted to show his children that perseverance can overcome any obstacle. Now, with his diploma in hand, Mark plans to pursue a degree in engineering.

“The CCTA program was a huge help, to be honest,” Alvis shared. “It gives a lot of people my age a chance to come back to school, finish, and continue pursuing a college degree if you choose to. This program gave me a second chance, and now I can pursue my dream of becoming an engineer.”

Aylin Gomez, another CCTA graduate, not only earned her high school diploma but also an EKG certification, bringing her one step closer to her dream of becoming a nurse practitioner. Aylin expressed her deep gratitude for the opportunities provided by PSJA CCTA.

“I’m very grateful for CCTA because I was able to finish my requirements and graduate,” Gomez said. “My best friend also went through the program and graduated from CCTA, and my brother is currently attending. This is the perfect program, and you couldn’t find a better one.”

PSJA CCTA goes beyond helping students earn their high school diplomas; it equips them with the tools to thrive in high-demand fields by offering opportunities to earn college certificates or industry-based certifications. Each student in the program receives a laptop to support their studies, ensuring they have the resources needed to succeed.

PSJA ISD Superintendent Dr. Alejandro Elias shared inspiring words with the graduates, celebrating their accomplishments and looking ahead to their future.

“Your ceremony is more than just a recognition of your academic achievement. It is a testament to your resilience, determination, and commitment to your future,” Dr. Elias said. “Each of you has traveled a unique path, overcoming challenges and embracing opportunities along the way. The journey to earning your high school diploma has not been easy, but your perseverance proves that with hard work, anything is possible.”

PSJA CCTA continues to serve as a critical pathway for students to complete their secondary education while laying the foundation for post-secondary success. Many graduates did not just receive their high school diplomas but also completed industry certifications, positioning them strongly in today’s competitive job market. These certifications include Emergency Telecommunicator, Phlebotomy, EKG Technician, Google Analytics, and Food Safety & AMP Science Certification.
