Texas Railroad Commission seeks feedback on waste management rule updates

AUSTIN – The Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) is gathering public feedback on proposed revisions to its waste management regulations, marking the first comprehensive update in 40 years.

The new rules aim to improve safety measures, protect groundwater, and integrate technological advancements in the energy industry’s resource development. The public comment period, which began on Aug. 16, will remain open until Sept. 30.

To facilitate public participation, the RRC has scheduled two hearings this week. The first will be held in-person on Thursday in Austin, followed by a virtual hearing on Friday. Details on how to view these sessions via webcast are available on the RRC’s website.

Anyone needing special communication or accommodation assistance for the hearings can contact the RRC Rules Coordinator at rulescoordinator@rrc.texas.gov.

For further information on the proposed rule changes, visit the RRC website at under Chapters 3 and 4.
