NEW: House GOP Subpoenas MN Gov. Walz on Allegations His Office Knew About $250M COVID-19 Fraud Scheme

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, whom you might know is running as Kamala Harris’ running mate for the Democrats in a certain election happening in 60 days, is getting called on the carpet by a GOP-chaired congressional committee over a damning report that recently exposed a Minnesota Education Department fraud scheme aimed at defrauding the state of $250 million in funds meant to feed children during the COVID pandemic. The cabal appears to include not just a non-profit based in the 10,000 Lakes state, but officials from various levels of government–including a member of the Biden administration cabinet.

As my colleague, Susie Moore shared in a brief capsule as part of this morning’s Thursday news prep piece:

….[T]he House Education and the Workforce Committee has subpoenaed Minnesota Governor (and Kamala Harris running mate) Tim Walz to produce documents and information regarding the Feeding Our Future COVID-19 fraud scandal.

Now thanks to the subpoena request from the committee focused on America’s education system, we have a bit more knowledge to pass along on what is being alleged against the man who could become our nation’s next vice president:

The Minnesota-based Feeding Our Future (FOF) has been accused of misusing $250 million in taxpayer funds that were meant to go to hungry children.

The federal government has charged more than 70 people associated with the nonprofit, and five of them have been convicted of fraud. The group allegedly submitted the names of fake children receiving free meals during the pandemic.

Education Chair Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) issued subpoenas for Walz, Minnesota Commissioner of Education Willie Jett, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Agriculture Inspector General Phyllis Fong.

The Hill’s report (linked above) also includes the individuals the lawmakers want to hear from, which include Biden Agriculture Department Secretary Tom Vilsack, Agriculture Inspector General Phyllis Fong, and Minnesota Commissioner of Education Willie Jett.

In a letter sent Thursday, Education Chair Virginia Foxx (R-NC) wrote:

“Statements in the press by you and your representatives indicate that you and other executive officers were involved, or had knowledge of, MDE’s [Minnesota Department of Education’s] administration of the FCNP [Federal Child Nutrition Program] and responsibilities and actions regarding the massive fraud.”

Interesting that this move happened today, if you think about it. Whispers continue to circulate, as we wrote earlier on Thursday, that Team Kamala is having severe heartburn right now about pushing aside Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro for MN Gov. Walz. They have no one to blame but themselves, if true.
