Texas Humane Heroes showcase puppy up for adoption

LEANDER (KXAN) — Leander is set to become a dog and cat haven.

The Texas Humane Heroes, a no-kill, nonprofit located in the Central Texas city, showcased a special puppy up for adoption in honor of the Clear The Shelters campaign.

Intake and foster manager for Texas Humane Heroes Kate Nesbitt spoke with KXAN’s Mike Rush and Avery Travis about the shelter’s mission to rescue pets across Texas.

“We usually pull from (shelters) that are high kill just to make sure that they can make space so more animals can go in,” Nesbitt said.

Nesbitt said the nonprofit will always welcome any animal that comes into their hands.

“We absolutely love to save animals,” Nesbitt said.

Nesbitt told KXAN that they usually see an increase in foot traffic around this time of year.

“We have pulled quite a few more animals into our shelter in the hopes that we can help clear the shelters across the nation,” Nesbitt said.

Although The Texas Humane Heroes is not an open-intake facility, the organization does as much as possible to take in animals to alleviate the issues of overpopulation in shelters that euthanize for space.

For those interested in pet adoption or looking into volunteering, the Clear the Shelters campaign runs until Tuesday, Sept. 10. Texas Humane Heroes has details on adoptable dogs and cats listed on its website.
