‘We Heard Shots’: Trump Describes What Really Happened During Second Assassination Attempt

Donald Trump really wanted to make that last putt, but a sniper’s rifle put an end to what was supposed to be a relaxing afternoon of golf for the former president.

As RedState has been reporting, Ryan Wesley Routh is now in police custody after making what would be the second attempt on Trump’s life in recent months. The resilient former president joined in on a Twitter/X Spaces discussion Monday evening and shared his account of what happened on Sunday.

“So I was playing golf with some of my friends on Sunday morning –  very peaceful, very beautiful weather. Everything was beautiful, nice place to be, and all of a sudden we heard shots being fired … I guess probably four or five. Secret Service knew immediately it was bullets, and they grabbed me.”

Despite Trump wanting to sink “that last putt,” his Secret Service agents made it clear that he wasn’t going to remain on the gold course, recalling, “We got into the carts, and we moved along pretty, pretty good. I was with an agent, and the agent did a fantastic job.”

Trump’s Secret Service detail was on the receiving end of much-deserved criticism after the first assassination attempt in July, but he assured the Spaces listeners that his team was on top of things this time: “It was quite something, but it worked out well, and Secret Service did an excellent job, and they have the man behind bars, and hopefully he’s going to be there for a long time. Dangerous person, very, very dangerous person.”

Trump continued with praise for the security detail, adding, “[…] interestingly, was a Secret Service agent had seen a barrel of an AK 47, which is a very powerful rifle, and he started shooting at the barrel. How good is that, right? Could only see the barrel. Based on that, he started shooting and ran toward the target.”

He also had kind words for the citizen who noticed Routh’s odd behavior and took a picture of Routh’s license plate, which was helpful to law enforcement in promptly apprehending the suspect.

When questioned about the aftermath of surviving two assassination attempts, the former president responded with a criticism of his political opponents:

“Well, there’s a lot of rhetoric going on right now. A lot of people think that the Democrats, when they talk about threat to democracy and all of this. And it seems that both of these people were radical left.”

Earlier Monday, the Trump campaign released a memo detailing the absurdly long list of times Democrats have used incendiary language when talking about the former president, including the time Joe Biden said, “It’s time to put Trump in a bullseye.”

It’s clear from Trump’s comments on Monday evening that he’s quite used to the verbal abuse hurled at him from the left. Sadly, it seems he’s also getting used to assassination attempts.
