After the man crashed into another vehicle, police approached on foot and the man shot himself, Mansfield PD said.
MANSFIELD, Texas — Police confirm to WFAA that a man is dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after firing at officers during a police chase that ended in Mansfield Monday afternoon.
An intersection near the Texas 360 and East Broad Street overpass was blocked as officers responded to what appeared to be a crashed vehicle.
According to Mansfield Police, officers responded to a call of a wrong-way driver in the 2200 block of FM 917 around 12:30 p.m. Mansfield PD said when officers tried to pull the car over, it initially yielded before speeding off, leading to a chase.
Mansfield PD told WFAA the man fired multiple shots at officers during the chase, hitting a police car, but there were no injuries. Mansfield PD said officers fired back but never hit the suspect.
In a statement to WFAA, the Mansfield Police Department said that the chase crossed into Burleson, where other agencies were called in to assist. Police said that the chase eventually went back into Mansfield, where the driver rear-ended a car in the westbound lanes of the 3400 block of E. Broad St. Police approached on foot, and the man shot himself, police said.
Mansfield PD confirmed that none of its officers fired at the scene where the chase ended.
Several police cars and at least one ambulance responded to the scene.
According to police, Mansfield Fire and Rescue pronounced the man dead at the scene. Police told WFAA the man’s identity will be released after the next of kin have been notified.
In a statement, Mansfield PD said the Texas Rangers have been notified, and the death is being investigated by the Mansfield Police Department Criminal Investigations Division. The department also said their Internal Affairs Unit will be investigating.
Mansfield ISD said the closure of the intersection could lead to bus delays and route changes.
“MISD’s Transportation Department is aware and is working to adjust their afternoon routes to avoid the area, but there could still be delays for students who attend schools in the affected area and for students in choice schools and special education programs who ride the bus,” Mansfield ISD said in a statement. “We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding as our bus drivers work to safely transport our students this afternoon.”
