UT-Austin ranks 7th best public school in US, best Texas public university: report

  

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Again, the University of Texas at Austin ranked among the best public schools in the country, according to new rankings released Tuesday.

UT-Austin ranked as the seventh best public university in the U.S., according to the 2025 Best College rankings from U.S. News and World Report. UT tied with the University of Florida. Both rank as No. 30 among nation al universities .

The university moved up two places since the 2024 rankings when it was ranked as the ninth-best public university in the country.

“We use our strengths to prepare adaptable, skilled students, and to collaborate on solutions to society’s biggest challenges,” UT President Jay Hartzell said in a statement. “The opportunities we offer students and the extraordinary talent among our faculty are reflected in top 10 rankings across 26 undergraduate programs. Given all of this, it is no surprise that demand to be a Longhorn is at an all-time high.”

UT-Austin also ranked as the best public university in the Lone Star State, followed by Texas A&M University in 21st place, according to the 2025 rankings.

  • University of Texas–Austin: No. 7 (tie)
  • Texas A&M University: No. 21 (tie)
  • University of Texas–Dallas: No. 52 (tie)
  • University of Houston: No. 74 (tie)
  • Texas Tech University: No. 116 (tie)
  • University of North Texas: No. 119 (tie)
  • University of Texas–Rio Grande Valley: No. 119 (tie)
  • Sam Houston State University: No. 126 (tie)
  • University of Texas–Arlington: No. 126 (tie)
  • University of Texas–San Antonio: No. 126 (tie)
  • University of Texas–El Paso: No. 149 (tie)
  • Texas State University: No. 152 (tie)

In addition to ranking as the top university in Texas, UT-Austin had several programs ranked among the best in the country. The McCombs School of Business ranked No. 6 among business programs, the Cockrell School of Engineering ranked No. 10 among undergraduate engineering schools, and UT’s computer science program ranked No. 10.
