No. 8 Texas tops LSU to start SEC schedule 2-0

  

AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 8 Texas picked up another Southeastern Conference win on the road, sweeping Louisiana State on Sunday at the Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge.

Set scores were 25-20, 25-20, 25-15.

Madisen Skinner led a balanced attack for the Longhorns with 10 kills while Marianna Singletary notched eight. Jenna Wenaas and Reagan Rutherford each had seven and Ayden Ames smacked six. Devin Kahahawai had four block assists and Singletary had three.

Averi Carlson had 17 set assists while Ella Swindle had 16 and Emma Halter notched eight digs.

LSU’s Jurnee Robinson had a match-high 17 kills but the Tigers didn’t have another player with more than seven. Texas hit .302 for the match with 39 kills and 10 errors in 96 attempts while LSU hit .154 with 36 kills and 20 errors in 104 attempts.

Texas led 22-16 in the first set following a Skinner kill, and LSU worked it back to 24-20 before Singletary ended the set with a kill set up by Carlson. The Longhorns jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the second set following a Rutherford kill, but again, the Tigers fought back and avoided two set points before another Rutherford kill ended it.

Texas put the match away with an 11-2 stretch in the third set to turn a 10-10 tie into a 21-12 lead and cruise to the win.

Texas (7-3, 2-0 SEC) is back at Gregory Gym on Wednesday to face South Carolina.
