Let’s just say Scheffler and the high bidder are acquainted through sports.
DALLAS — A vehicle worth more in its lore and legacy than anything is up for auction: Dallas golfer Scottie Scheffler’s famous 2012 GMC Yukon XL with over 200,000 miles on it.
Aside from being previously owned by the best golfer on the planet, its story is legendary, too.
So the story goes, Scheffler’s father, Scott, bought the vehicle after the family’s car broke down more than a decade ago in Augusta, Georgia, at the 2012 Masters. They needed to get back home to Dallas and ended up buying the Yukon in Georgia to make the trip.
Scott Scheffler gifted Scottie the SUV when he graduated from the University of Texas – and he’s driven it ever since.
According to Golfweek’s Adam Schupak, the two-time Masters champion got an upgrade – which is probably a good thing after becoming a father this year – and needed to get the Yukon off his hands. So, Scheffler donated his famous wheels to Triumph Over Kid Cancer (TOKC), a non-profit that raises money for childhood cancer research, Schupak reported.
A live auction for the car at a fundraising dinner started at $10,000 and got to $15,000 when it suddenly jumped to $50,000. All this for a 12-plus-year-old car with 200,000 miles on it. The person who upped the price? Legendary sportscaster Jim Nantz.
“Fifty thousand,” he said. “I’ll be more than happy to store Scottie’s car in my garage.”
Nantz was the high bidder for the Yukon, but his $50,000 price tag will ultimately represent the starting price when it goes on auction online by Dallas based Heritage Auction House, Schupak reported. Details on the online auction are not yet available.
