A North Texas private university is offering free tuition to qualifying in-state students

Starting in the fall of 2025, first-year students who qualify for Pell Grants will be eligible to receive free tuition from Texas Wesleyan.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth is now offering free tuition to qualifying students from Texas, school officials announced Tuesday.

Starting in the fall of 2025, first-year students who qualify for Pell Grants will be eligible to receive free tuition from Texas Wesleyan, which is located in east Fort Worth.

The free tuition can be renewed for up to four years if students are enrolled full-time “and maintain satisfactory academic standards.” Students who receive the free tuition could also be eligible for scholarships to cover the costs of books and room and board, officials said.

Students can apply for free tuition by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. If they qualify for the Pell Grant, the free tuition benefit will cover any remaining tuition not covered by the grant.

“This program is a game-changer for students in Texas who dream of a college education, especially at a small, private institution like Texas Wesleyan, that may face financial barriers,” Messer said. “We believe in the power of education to transform lives. By eliminating tuition barriers for deserving Texas students, we’re opening doors to countless opportunities.”

Pell Grants, which, unlike loans, do not need to be repaid, are awarded to students “who display exceptional financial need. The Pell Grant maximum for the 2024-25 school year was $7,395, though amounts vary depending on how much a student qualifies for. Texas Wesleyan tuition for full-time students is around $34,000.

Even before the free tuition announcement this week, around 90% of Texas Wesleyan students receive some form of financial aid to cover the cost of tuition, fees and housing, according to university data.
