DALLAS — Sometimes, all you need is a chance.
And at just 17 years old, Sealey Strawn is already making waves in the world of professional soccer.
She’s a junior in high school, balancing the typical challenges of teenage life — friends, classes, and extracurriculars. But what sets her apart is her role as one of the youngest players on Dallas Trinity FC, the city’s first professional women’s soccer team in the United Soccer League Super League.
Strawn’s journey began earlier this year when she joined the club as an academy player, a position that allows her to maintain college eligibility while gaining invaluable experience at the professional level.
“First practice I had with them, it was a great experience,” Strawn said. “And then that next day, they’re talking about, ‘Hey, we want you guys to sign an academy contract and be a part of the team.’”
From the start, Strawn knew this was an unparalleled opportunity.
“It’s hard to explain in words,” she said.
Her development has been fueled by the guidance of her coaches and the camaraderie of her teammates. And a few weeks ago, all of that hard work culminated in a moment Strawn will never forget.
Strawn said there was something that felt different on the morning of November 2.
“I wasn’t sure what it was,” she said. “I was like, ‘I’m not sure I’ll see the field, but I have a really good feeling.’”
Her instincts were right.
During the match, Strawn seized an opportunity that would make history.
“The moment that I saw the keeper…” Sealey paused, reliving the memory.
“I took off, 100%. I was not gonna let anyone else get to that ball.”
Over the streaming audio waves, the game announcer could be heard: “First time strike saved — the rebound is in — finished off by Sealey Strawn!”
With that, Strawn scored her first professional goal.
“I’m pretty sure I let out the biggest scream ever,” Strawn said.
The accomplishment is a milestone for both Strawn and Dallas Trinity FC in its debut season. It’s also a testament to her faith and determination.
“God gave me this gift for a reason,” Strawn said. “And I know wherever my path leads, He’s leading it for me.”
As the team’s first season draws to a close, Strawn is already looking ahead to the future — with a heart full of gratitude and a drive to keep making an impact, both on and off the field.
“I could not wipe the smile off my face,” she said.
Strawn will enter her senior year of high school preparing, now committed to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
