Elliott’s impending release was first reported by Josina Anderson.
DALLAS — Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has been released, two front office sources have confirmed to WFAA.
Josina Anderson, who broke the news on X, also reported that Elliott requested the release. This marks the second time in three years that Elliott has been released by the Cowboys. A Cowboys front office source told WFAA’s Mike Leslie that they want Elliott to have the opportunity to sign with a playoff contender.
Elliott joined the Cowboys for his second stint in the offseason after playing one season for the New England Patriots. As Rico Dowdle’s backup, Elliott has played in 15 games this season, totaling 226 yards and three touchdowns in 74 carries.
Elliott was drafted No. 4 overall by Dallas in the 2016 NFL Draft. He led the NFL in rushing twice (2016, 2018), was a first-team All-Pro his rookie season (2016) and has been named to the Pro Bowl three times (2016, 2018, 2019).
Dallas wraps their 2024-25 season on Sunday against the Washington Commanders.
