Richardson police officer injured while making arrest, officials say

The officer reported minor injuries from a gun going off, taken to a hospital for treatment, and was later released.

RICHARDSON, Texas — A Richardson police officer was injured Thursday evening after a gun went off while making an arrest, police say.

According to police, officers were called at about 7:52 p.m. to a business in the 1500 block of East Belt Line Road in response to a woman screaming that someone was trying to kill her.

Upon arrival, the woman reportedly ran into the roadway immediately and police determined she was suffering a “psychotic break,” police said.

Police soon detained the woman in the roadway and put her in handcuffs, officials say, but she reportedly continued resisting. As they tried to put her into a police vehicle, she reportedly grabbed an officer’s gun and caused it to go off.

The gunshot impacted the ground near the three officers trying to detain her, police say, and one officer reported minor injuries. However, police say the bullet didn’t hit the officer.

That officer was taken to a hospital for treatment and was later released, police say. They are now back on patrol.

No one else was injured during the incident, police say. The woman was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
