Cowboys lead Commanders at halftime in sleepy season finale at AT&T Stadium

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys lead the Washington Commanders by a 6-3 score at halftime of their regular season finale at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, as Trey Lance has offered a fairly sharp first half in his first start as a Cowboy.

Lance has completed 11-of-20 passes for 125 yards, leading the Cowboy’s offense on a couple of long field goal drives, showing the ability to go through his reads and find open targets downfield. His first two passes of the day went for 31 and 33 yards to Jalen Tolbert and Kavontae Turpin, to burst his way into the football game and instill some early confidence.

The Cowboy’s defense also has played very good ball, holding down Jayden Daniels and a quality Commanders offense through 30 minutes. Micah Parsons has 2.5 sacks on the day, including two on the first three plays of the game, to give him 12 for the year. With 12 sacks in this 2024 season, he joins Reggie White as the only players in NFL history to record 12 or more sacks in each of their first four years in the league.

Dallas has held Washington to just 65 yards on 24 offensive plays, in keeping the Commanders to those three first-half points. 34 of those yards came on the final possession of the half for Washington, when they finally mustered the lone field goal.

Dallas converted a key 4th & 1 late in the 2nd quarter, with a Hunter Luepke plunge to move the chains, and set up a Rico Dowdle swing pass that earned another first down. Trey Lance then had a quarterback draw that picked up nine yards and got Dallas to the Washington 11. Dowdle picked up the first down with a two-yard plunge, to give Dallas 1st and Goal. Three plays later, Dallas went for it on 4th & Goal, Lance evaded pressure in the pocket, rolled to his left and threw for Dowdle who was open in the endzone. But Lance underthrew the pass and bounced it just shy of Dowdle for the incompletion and the turnover on downs.

Dallas has the ball first in the third quarter, looking to add to their lead.
