End of an era: Andy’s Bar in Denton set to close after 30 years of music

The bar has been a staple of live music in the North Texas college town for more than three decades.

DENTON, Texas — Andy’s Bar, a live music venue that has been a staple of the Denton music scene for decades, will close its doors in February.

According to Denton Live, the closure is due to a dispute over new leasing terms proposed by the building’s landlord. Andy’s first opened in 1994 on the northeast corner of Denton Square. The building itself, built in 1877, is one of the oldest in Denton.

Spune Productions, a music booking company, will continue to host shows at Andy’s through February.

Both Andy’s Bar and Andy’s Basement, which is located directly underneath Andy’s Bar, will be closing. According to Denton Live, Paschall Bar, a speakeasy located on the second floor of the building, is not listed for lease. Spune talent booker Charlie DeBolt said Paschall may remain at its current location.

Andy’s is the one Denton location that is a part of the Jambaloo music festival in early February, from Feb. 1 through Feb. 8, and will continue to participate in the event before closing.

The last day to visit Andy’s will be on Feb. 28, which will end with music from indie band Macseal as well as Carly Cosgrove and Guppy.

This is the latest business on the Denton Square, known for being largely made up of locally-owned businesses, to close. Most recently, Barley & Board, a restaurant located catty-corner from Andy’s, announced it would be closing last month.

Another historic music venue also announced its building would be demolished as well. Though Lizard Lounge closed in 2020, its building remained up until recently, when it announced the building would be demolished by the land’s new owners.
