One thing that fascinated and amused conservatives going into the 2024 presidential election campaign season was how Democrats and their allies in the media and NeverTrumpLand continued to obsess over the events of January 6, 2021.

It was as though they believed it was going to be the defining issue of the campaign and one that would negatively impact then-presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump’s chances of winning a second term in office.
Even in her closing speech made just before the November election, Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the issue, deliberately choosing the venue to deliver her remarks knowing it was where Trump held his J6 event.
“He is the person who stood at this very spot nearly four years ago and sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol to overturn the will of the people in a free and fair election,” she falsely claimed at the time.

As Congress prepared to certify President-Elect Donald Trump’s Election Day victory Monday, CNN brought on their polling data guru, Harry Enten, to talk about recent polling in the context of January 6th.
In his remarks, Enten stunned CNN News Central anchor John Berman with the numbers he shared:
You know, I think if you go back, you know, four years ago, right, [reading from screen]: “Trump’s role on January 6, 2021, should make him ineligible to be president,” the clear majority of voters said yes, 56 percent . And that was including removal from office.
But, of course, Donald Trump won the presidency. And part of the reason why was because of views on Trump completely shifted, including Trump’s role on January 6, 2021, “should make him ineligible for the presidency.” By 2023, 2024, it was just 47 percent.
So, we saw this drop of about nine points. And that, of course, is all the difference in the world, going from a majority to short of a majority. And, of course, Donald Trump won the vast, vast, vast, vast, vast majority of the other 53 percent who did not believe that his role on January 6th would make him ineligible for the presidency.

As to the why of it, Enten explained further:
…part of the reason why is, okay, “was Trump greatly responsible for the attack on the Capitol?” You go back to January 2021, it was 48 percent. By the time of December of 2023, look at that, again, a clear shift down to 37 percent. This is an 11-point drop. Very much mirroring that drop that we saw that that folks said that, of course, would make him ineligible for the presidency. So, that is part of the reason why, right? Folks – fewer folks thought he was responsible – greatly responsible for what happened on January 6th.
But it’s not just that. It’s that people, simply put, didn’t care as much about the attack on the Capitol. Look at this, January 6th is the biggest – is your biggest memory of Trump’s first term in office. By the time of 2024, look at this, look at this, it was just five percent. Just five percent of Americans. And among Republicans, it was just two percent.
Watch:
In other words, no matter how obsessed Democrats remain with the issue, a majority of voters are not with them and haven’t been for a very long time. And it’s one big reason why Donald Trump is preparing for his second inauguration and is already viewed as the de facto president while Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are packing boxes and trying to figure out what they’ll do next.
