Dallas ISD vendor reports data breach, compromising staff, student information

PowerSchool, a Dallas ISD vendor, reported a data breach affecting students and staff across the U.S., the district said.

DALLAS — PowerSchool, a vendor providing services to multiple North Texas school districts, recently announced a data breach affecting the personal information of students and staff, the district said in a letter to parents.

PowerSchool, a company hired by districts to store student information, reported the data breach to Dallas ISD. Several other North Texas districts, including Denton ISD, Frisco ISD and Richardson ISD, use PowerSchool but were not impacted by the breach.

PowerSchool immediately took steps to address the incident and protect their clients, Dallas ISD said in a letter to parents obtained by WFAA. PowerSchool assured Dallas ISD that “the incident was contained before any of the compromised data was replicated or disseminated,” according to the letter.

There is no evidence of additional unauthorized activity, PowerSchool said. The company is working with federal officials to identify the person responsible for the breach, according to Dallas ISD.

PowerSchool will provide credit monitoring to affected adults and identity protection to affected minors, according to Dallas ISD. No passwords were compromised in the data breach, according to Dallas ISD.

Dallas ISD recommends reporting suspicious activity, and remaining suspicious of any fishing attempts, the letter states.

“Dallas ISD takes any breach of sensitive information entrusted in our care seriously and continues to work diligently to do everything possible to prevent cybersecurity issues with the systems under our control,” the letter states. The district will provide additional updates when more information is received from PowerSchool.
