Police chase, officer-involved shooting shuts down I-35E south of Dallas, officials say

Dallas police confirmed officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the area on I-35 in Red Oak.

RED OAK, Texas — The southbound lanes of I-35E were shut down in Red Oak on Thursday morning because of a police chase that ended in a crash and then a reported officer-involved shooting, officials say.

Sources tell WFAA a man wanted for capital murder led police on a chase. Sources say there was a wreck during the chase, and the suspect got out of the car. At some point after the crash, Dallas officers shot the suspect, sources say. The condition of the suspect is unknown, but sources say he was transported to an area hospital.

Dallas police sources say the Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation of the officer-involved shooting because it happened in Dallas County.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the shooting happened on the I-35 southbound service road at the Red Oak Road overpass.

Texas DPS officials say the suspect’s vehicle hit an occupied car and the two people in the second vehicle were injured. The two people in the second vehicle were taken to area hospitals, officials say.

Red Oak is about 20 miles south of Dallas. The southbound highway lanes remained closed into the early-afternoon hours.

WFAA chopper footage showed three vehicles wrecked at the scene, traffic backed up in the area, multiple police units and a fire truck at the scene.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says I-35 southbound at the Red Oak Road Bridge are expected to be closed until 6 p.m.

Dallas police tell WFAA the Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the shooting and the Red Oak Police Department is investigating the crash.

This is a developing story. WFAA will update this story as additional information becomes available.
