Data shows ‘historic crime rate decrease’ in Plano, police say

The overall major crime rate is 16.10 (per 1,000 residents), which is the lowest it has been since 1993 when they started compiling crime rate data, PPD said.

PLANO, Texas — The Plano Police Department (PPD) said recent data compiled by its Crime Analysis Unit indicates a continuing decline in violent crime and property crime rates.

In fact, the overall major crime rate is 16.10 (per 1,000 population ratio), which is the lowest it has been since 1993, according to PPD. The seven offenses that the FBI collectively terms “Part 1 Crime” (more commonly known outside of law enforcement as “Major Crime”) are Homicide, Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Larceny, and Motor Vehicle Theft.

“Major Crime” is further broken down into two categories: Violent Crime (consisting of Homicide, Rape, Robbery, and Aggravated Assault) and Property Crime (consisting of Burglary, Larceny, and Motor Vehicle Theft).

Violent Crime per 1,000 decreased in every category except aggravated assault, according to Plano police. The violent crime rate is 1.55, which is a decrease from 1.58 in 2015. Property crime per 1,000 decreased in every category and is down 11.9%. The property crime rate in 2024 is 14.55, the lowest it’s been since 1993, Plano police said.

The Plano Police Department identified several factors contributing to the decrease in the crime rate:

  • Proactive investigations, utilizing advancements in technologies by the Criminal Investigative Services Division, have increased the rate of suspect identification leading to more successful arrests.
  • Increased availability of camera / surveillance devices installed in residential homes, businesses, and around the city has led to more successful investigations.
  • The department’s partnership with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and prosecutors contributes to successful prosecutions.
