Texas emergency management mobilizes resources ahead of winter storm

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) has begun mobilizing state emergency response resources in anticipation of a winter storm expected to impact the state starting tomorrow and lasting through midweek. Texans are urged to prepare and stay informed, according to TDEM.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the storm will bring snow and icy conditions to parts of South, Central, and Southeast Texas, with freezing rain posing challenges, particularly near the coast. Freezing temperatures are expected across large areas of the state.

TDEM is elevating the readiness level of the Texas State Emergency Operations Center to Level II (Escalated Response) at 7:00 a.m. Monday to support local officials’ requests for state assistance and ensure communities have necessary resources, stated the agency.

Representatives from various Texas Emergency Management Council agencies have been requested to report to the SOC on Monday. These include the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service, Texas A&M Forest Service, Texas Department of State Health Services, and others, each tasked with specific roles such as roadway treatment, public works response, snow clearance, and emergency medical support.

Texans are encouraged to follow local officials’ instructions and prepare by making a plan and assembling an emergency supply kit. Winter weather resources, safety tips, and current road conditions can be found on the Texas Disaster Portal at tdem.texas.gov.
