Wintry mix expected tonight across Central Texas

AUSTIN (KXAN) — We are just a few hours away from wintry conditions taking hold and bringing with it a chance of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Clouds have now moved in trapping our temperatures in the mid 30s and most likely keeping them there through the rest of the day.

A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from now until noon Wednesday due to dangerous temperatures and wind chills.

Wind chill will knock another 5-10 degrees off the above air temperatures. Cover exposed skin if heading outside the next few days.

Winter storm arrives tonight

Clouds will begin to increase by midday today, but only a few flurries are possible during the daylight hours.

Tonight into early Tuesday morning brings the majority of our wintry weather. A few stray snow showers or flurries will be possible for the daylight hours of Tuesday morning, but the steadiest snow should have wrapped up by daybreak.

Winter Weather Alerts

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for all of the Austin Metro counties and most of our eastern counties beginning tonight at 6 p.m. and continuing until 6 p.m. Tuesday due to accumulating snow and sleet and a light freezing rain that could make travel dangerous, especially on elevated bridges.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for parts of the Hill Country where lower snow/sleet accumulations are expected, but some hazardous travel is still expected.

Winter weather alerts in effect 6 p.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday

While widespread snow arrives this evening and ends Tuesday morning, there may still be lingering icy roads and bridges after the precipitation ends. Use caution if travelling as black ice will be a concern later in the day on Tuesday.

Warmer temperatures will slowly work back into Central Texas with highs back in the 60s by next weekend.
