North Texas police find suspected church thief hiding in garbage bin

Balch Springs police said they were able to recover a ladder and music equipment that was stolen from the church.

BALCH SPRINGS, Texas — His hiding skills were garbage.

A suspected church thief was arrested in Balch Springs where he was busted while hiding in a trash bin, police said Monday.

In a social media post, Balch Springs police said officers responded to an alarm at a church located on Bruton Road. When officers arrived, they saw a U-Haul truck quickly driving away with stolen items in the back.

Police said as the U-Haul truck left Balch Springs and headed towards Mesquite, some of the stolen items fell out, and two of the three suspects exited the truck.

One of the suspects police dubbed “Oscar the Grouch” attempted to hide inside a blue trash bin next to a basketball hoop in a Mesquite neighborhood.

In the picture posted by Balch Spring PD, the suspect soon realized it wasn’t a suitable hiding spot as the photo captured him trying to get out of the trash bin.

“We would like to express our gratitude to several Mesquite residents who bravely followed and recorded one of the suspects involved in the burglary,” the post read.

Police said they were able to recover a ladder and music equipment that was stolen from the church. However, the two other suspects are still at large.
