Texas Department of Public Safety urges caution amid winter storm

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is working tirelessly to assist those affected by the ongoing winter storm impacting the state. Ice and snow continue to create hazardous driving conditions, particularly in Southeast Texas.

The DPS advises residents to avoid driving in inclement weather if possible. For those who must travel, caution and reduced speed are recommended. Drivers should be especially careful on bridges and overpasses, where ice can accumulate before it is visible on roads, according to the DPS.

Motorists are reminded to move over or slow down when approaching law enforcement, fire, EMS, Texas Department of Transportation, tow trucks, and other vehicles stopped on the roadside. The DPS encourages monitoring road conditions via DriveTexas.org and suggests keeping a blanket and water in vehicles for emergencies.

For roadside assistance, Texans can dial 1-800-525-5555, a number also found on the back of a Texas Driver License.
