Jury deliberating in trial of man accused of killing neighbor

SAN ANTONIO – After four days of testimony and a weather delay, a Bexar County jury will finally deliberate the case of a man accused of fatally shooting his neighbor on Christmas Day 2021.

Mason Lubitz was charged with the murder of Trevor Beeman on Dec. 25, 2021.

During closing arguments, the defense said that Lubitz was in his right to shoot Beeman in self-defense after he walked into his apartment threatening to assault him.

But the state says Beeman didn’t walk inside and that his body, after being shot, landed right where he was standing outside the door.

Prosecutor Jordan Brown also told the jury Lubitz, for months, was stewing over being previously hit by Beeman and planned the murder.

KSAT 12 will livestream closing arguments and the verdict. It can be seen on KSAT.com, the free KSAT+ streaming app and KSAT’s YouTube page.

If found guilty, Lubitz will face anywhere from five to 99 years, or life, in prison.

BACKGROUND

The two neighbors had an ongoing feud that started months before the deadly shooting.

Authorities said Lubitz called police on Beeman for allegedly beating his girlfriend and later for assaulting him.

According to testimony, on that Christmas morning, Beeman was going to walk his dog with his father when Lubitz started yelling at them. Beeman went to confront Lubitz at his door when he was shot seven times.

According to the defense, Lubitz opened fire in self-defense as they say Beeman walked into Lubitz’s apartment and threatened to slap him again.

During more than four days of testimony, the state called up just over 20 witnesses and claimed that Lubitz planned to kill Beeman for previously assaulting him and was seen the night before on a security camera walking his rifle into his apartment.
