A 3-0 week with two ranked wins moves Texas back into AP women’s top 5

AUSTIN (KXAN) — After a perfect week on the hardwood, the Texas women’s basketball team is back in the top five.

The Longhorns moved up two spots to No. 5 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 women’s basketball rankings released Monday, following a blowout nonconference win and two close wins in Southeastern Conference play.

Texas (20-2, 6-1 SEC) thumped Maryland 89-51 on Jan. 20 at the Coretta Scott King Classic in Newark, New Jersey, and then edged Tennessee 80-76 at home Jan. 23 before clipping Ole Miss 61-58 Sunday in Oxford. The Terrapins were ranked No. 8 and dropped six spots to No. 14 and the Lady Vols were knocked down one spot to No. 18.

The Longhorns are the only new team in this week’s top five with undefeated UCLA still at the top. South Carolina is No. 2, followed by Notre Dame at No. 3 with Southern California at No. 4. Connecticut held steady at No. 6 and Louisiana State slid back to No. 7, trading spots with Texas. Ohio State, TCU and Duke round out the top 10.

Texas hosts Missouri on Thursday and heads to College Station on Sunday to take on Texas A&M.
