‘A blessing’ | Dallas firefighter breaks silence on his miraculous survival after near 40-foot fall

The accident occurred on July 21 after a DFR fire engine hydroplaned off an overpass.

DALLAS — Almost six months to the day after his fire truck hydroplaned and plunged off an overpass onto train tracks below, Dallas Fire-Rescue Lieutenant John Hampton is still grappling with his survival and recovery.

“You don’t think about it until it happens,” Hampton said, wiping away tears in his first interview since the crash.

The accident left Hampton with severe injuries including fractured bones, a torn artery, bulging discs and more. While he has no memory of the crash, the rescue, or being trapped in the truck, Hampton later learned that a train had passed through the crash site just 18 seconds before his truck landed on the tracks.

“It’s a blessing,” he said.

Throughout his recovery, Hampton says his fellow firefighters have provided unwavering support.

“Just seeing the guys from the crew and the love…” Hampton said, trailing off with emotion. His colleagues have organized fundraisers, including selling t-shirts, and regularly brought food and donations to help during his rehabilitation.

Despite uncertainty about his future with his recovery, Hampton maintains optimism.

“I’d love to climb back on the rig, even if it’s just one time,” he said. “But we’ll see where we end up.”

Many well-wishers have told Hampton that God has bigger plans for him – something he agrees with, though the specifics remain unclear.

“What [is the plan?] We’re still working on that part,” he said with a smile.

Hampton hopes his story of perseverance can inspire others facing adversity.

“We go through struggles in life, but it’s how we handle it,” he reflected.

Drawing on the resilience that’s marked his recovery, Hampton added: “Tough times don’t last. Tough people do.”
