‘Devastating:’ American Airlines CEO provides an update on fatal mid-air jet collision

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom provided an update on the collision of an American Airlines regional jet and Blackhawk helicopter.

FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines is deploying resources to Washington D.C. in response to a fatal midair collision between an American Airlines regional jet and a Blackhawk helicopter, the airline’s CEO said.

Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines, addressed the media outside the airline’s Fort Worth headquarters overnight Thursday before heading to Washington D.C. to coordinate the airline’s response to the crash.

“I want to express my sincere condolences for what happened at DCA,” Isom said. “It’s devastating and our hearts go out to everyone that is involved.”

A jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members collided Wednesday with an Army helicopter while landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, WFAA previously reported. A large search and rescue effort in the nearby Potomac River is ongoing, the Associated Press reported.

Officials don’t know why the military aircraft was in the area, Isom said at the press conference.

American Airlines is deploying resources to Washington D.C. to assist passengers and their families, he said. The airline is cooperating with the NTSB as it investigates the incident, he added.

“Our efforts are focused on the needs of the families and loved ones of our passengers and crew members,” Isom said. “We are so grateful for all the actions of the first responders.”
