SAN ANTONIO – A Japanese researcher found that older adults are becoming addicted to their cellphones and scrolling through social media.
The overuse of devices has been found to lead to problems with sleep, mood and physical pain.
The City of San Antonio Recreations Program Manager Mike Kaye said there are positive and negative aspects to people being on their phones.
“We do see that a lot, a lot of on the phones not being up and active. It comes with all ages, but we are noticing an uptake in the senior population. So that’s why we encourage everyone to come out, be active and get fit with us,” Kaye said.
Here’s a link to the free fitness classes and the senior and adult centers in the San Antonio area, which also offer fitness opportunities.
Linda Nava takes the drumming class at the Commanders House Senior Center in San Antonio.
Nava encourages adults and seniors to get out of their houses and try to look out for their health.
“A lot of them don’t want to get out of the house. They don’t want to exercise. They just want to be at home. And we don’t want to do that while we can walk and, you know, be able to walk and see and everything we should take advantage of that and want to exercise,” she said.
Diana Flores takes one of those classes and says sometimes she has to be reminded to limit her time on social media. “My daughter tells me that, ‘Mom, it’s about time, got to get off YouTube or whatever’,”
