The Plot Twist was born out of a desire to connect with other readers of the genre.
DENTON, Texas — A lot of people are romantic about romantic literature.
Darci Middleton is one of them, and she knew other women appreciated the often unheralded genre, too.
But how many?
She had no idea until she opened The Plot Twist in Denton.
“Saturday and Sunday combined we had 1,400 people in our door,” Middleton said.
During both days celebrating The Plot Twist’s recent grand opening, there was a line around the block. It was a collection of people Middleton had been looking for: a community to discuss their love for love.
Up until then, it was just Middleton and her best friend at home trying to enjoy a good book and a good drink.
“Our kids were constantly knocking on the door saying, ‘mom, mom,’ walking in and so we said, ‘we need to find somewhere else to do this,’” Middleton recalled.
She took that thought, ran with it and recently opened The Plot Twist with her mom, Dawn.
It’s a “book bar”: part bookstore, part — very obviously — bar. It’s filled with books, booze and a back lounge cozy enough to gather with friends or read.
The Plot Twist hasn’t even been open two weeks and already Middleton said there’s enough evidence to prove romance isn’t dead.
“It’s a great way to meet new people and branch out of your comfort zone as well,” she said.
Although, be warned, Middleton said – anyone who dives into a good romantic read might just fall in love.
