Dallas Police warn drivers of heavy traffic and possible street closures Sunday due to protests

Last weekend, hundreds gathered near Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge to protest President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

DALLAS — The Dallas Police Department is warning drivers to be prepared for heavier than normal traffic Sunday due to planned protests in the downtown area.

In a Facebook post, the department said it is aware of the planned demonstrations near City Hall, adding that it could affect multiple roadways including Houston, Young and Main Street.

The department said there is a potential for these streets to be closed intermittently while the protest is underway.

Last week, on Saturday, Jan. 26, approximately 700 people gathered near the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge to protest President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, executive orders and threats of mass deportations.

The protest lasted several hours as demonstrators carried signs, chanted slogans, and waved flags, most of which represented the country of Mexico.

On Wednesday, Dallas PD Interim Chief Michael Igo released a video statement on federal immigration amid ICE crackdowns in North Texas and around the country.

“Dallas diversity is our strength,” Igo said in the video. “It contributes to the economic and cultural vibrancy of our community.”

Igo emphasized that the department would continue to serve all residents without regard to protected categories like race, ethnicity, origin or sexual orientation.
