The Mavs snagged Anthony Davis from the Lakers, but gave up a perennial talent in Luka Doncic. So did the trade bring them closer to a title?
DALLAS — It’s abundantly obvious — most Mavs fans do not like the Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade.
That’s the emotional side of the game. Fans get attached to players, especially when that player is a once-in-a-generation talent who just led your team to the NBA Finals the year before.
But let’s talk numbers.
Nico Harrison made this move so the team could win now. However, the Mavs don’t look any closer to a ring in Vegas’ eyes. In fact, they look further away.
To start the season, the Mavericks were the third-most favored team to win the championship at +900, only behind the Thunder and the Nuggets, per BetMGM. Hampered by injuries all season, they have dropped significantly in the championship odds.
Last week, the team held +2000 odds on BetMGM, making them the sixth-most likely team to win the Finals.
Post-trade, the Mavericks dropped even further, now sitting at +3000 on BetMGM. Ouch.
Of course, Vegas does not have a crystal ball, and they can be proven wrong. But as for who won the trade in their eyes?
The Lakers sat at +4000 odds to win a championship just last week, per BetMGM. After the trade, they’re sitting pretty at +1400.
