James Little told Matthew Mefford to get out and forcefully shoved Mefford down the side of the truck. Then, Little picked up his handgun and fired one round.
RUSK COUNTY, Texas — Arrest documents show the man accused of fatally shooting another man in the head last week in Rusk County argued with the victim in the suspect’s driveway before the shooting.
James Dillon Little is charged with murder in connection with the death of Matthew Mefford, 46, who passed away after being on life support due to a gunshot wound. Arrest documents say Mefford was shot in the back of the head.
The shooting happened on Jan. 28 on Deer Trail in the Henderson area. Deputies responded to find Little holding pressure to the wound on Mefford’s head. During the investigation, deputies found surveillance video showing that Little came out of his home and approached a truck in the driveway. Mefford was standing beside that vehicle, an arrest affidavit explained.
Mefford and Little could then be seen arguing, and Little told Mefford to get out and forcefully shoved Mefford down the side of the truck. Mefford stumbled with his back toward Little, and then Little picked up his handgun and fired one round, hitting Mefford in the back of the head, according to the affidavit.
Statements have led investigators to believe the shooting stemmed from a fight over a woman.
Mefford was taken to the hospital, where he was placed on life support and ultimately died. Little is in the Rusk County Jail on a $1 million bond.
