AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas shortstop Viviana Martinez will miss the 2025 season due to a knee injury, the program announced Monday.
The injury happened in the offseason and needed surgery to repair, a statement from the program said. Martinez tallied a slash line of .376/.431/.586 with five home runs and 70 hits in 186 at-bats last season. She was named an all-Big 12 infielder and a second-team All-American as a utility player by D1Softball.com.

“While we will, undoubtedly, miss Vivi’s physical skills on the field of play, her presence in the dugout, at practice and within the team will still play an important role in the success of this team,” Longhorns head coach Mike White said. “Her leadership, calm demeanor, and passion for the game manifests her maturity as a person and athlete. With the best medical care and rehabilitation at The University of Texas, there is no doubt Vivi will return in 2026 stronger and eager to continue her quest to lead this program to a national championship.”
Texas opens the 2025 season Feb. 7 in Lafayette, Louisiana at the Louisiana Classic, taking on the Ragin’ Cajuns and Longwood.
