Fort Worth fixture of 100-plus years moving HQ to another city nearby

The century-plus-year-old retailer is still looking for a new location for its flagship store.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A Fort Worth fixture of more than 100 years is moving to another North Texas city, but staying close.

Tandy Leather, a retailer selling leather goods, tools, buckles and more, is moving its headquarters to Benbrook southwest of Fort Worth.

The company also entered into lease agreements to remain in their current spaces until September. Tandy Leather is still searching for a new location for its Fort Worth flagship store, which is still open at 1900 S.E. Loop 820, according to a press release.

Tandy Leather, which was founded more than a century ago in 1919, announced late last year that it was selling its corporate headquarters and flagship store for $26.5 million.

Then, last week, the company entered into a 10-year lease for new headquarters and distribution space at Chisolm 20 Commerce Park in Benbrook. The lease, for about 134,000 square feet, will commence in July and run through September 2035.

“We are happy to have closed the sale of Tandy’s current facilities and to have found a new space that will keep Tandy headquartered in the Fort Worth area,” said Tandy Leather chairman Jeff Gramm. “Our new space is better sized for Tandy’s operations, and these transactions have allowed us to monetize an under-utilized asset for the benefit of our owners.”

The news comes shortly after Johan Hedberg was appointed Tandy Leather’s new CEO effective last month.

“We have our work cut out for us this year, with a complicated headquarters move and the relocation of our most profitable retail store. Tandy will also have to contend with higher expenses associated with our new leased facilities,” said Hedberg.

Tandy Leather has nearly 100 stores in North America in 40 U.S. states.
